Joseph Pilates a physical-culturist in Germany in 1883 believed that mental and physical are inter-related and developed a series of exercises to condition the entire body. Joseph Pilates originally called his work “Contrology.”, using the mind to control the muscles. He considered this to be a mind and body approach to movement founded on the integrative effect of principles such as centring, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow. Whether one is working out on a mat or using Pilates equipment, like the reformer or Cadillac, these basic principles infuse each exercise with intention and fullness of expression.
